Howdy Scotty! Canuck here. I want to get my first car (for grad school Sept. 2021). As per your recommendations, I would like a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla/Camry. Are there any bad years to watch out for? Would rather not spend anything more than $5k (which means anything newer than 2012 is pushing it).
I'll buy from a dealership or private party—which ever provides the best deal. Also, I plan on asking a mechanic to review the vehicle before I purchase!
Best wishes,
William Shakespeare.
These are helpful. Thank you very much!
Buy the Toyota Corolla hatchback, a very reliable car
I'll check this one out. Thank you!
All good, stay away for GM vehicle
Rarely with Honda or Toyota generationally. But if something does go wrong, they usually figure it out and fix it. Usually it’s the first year of the given generation.
Great! I'll keep this in mind, thanks!
@DayWalker 's answer has all the info you need. In terms of info that is not on paper the civic handles better and is more fun to drive, if you like driving I highly recommend (especially with a manual transmission). Also civics and corollas at the dealerships sell like hotcakes, so check regularly.
Okay, thanks for the info! I'll try to refresh dealership offerings regularly then. Good to know about the civic controlling. I was actually leaning towards the Honda civic since I prefer the interior look and how the speed meter is elevated on most of them.
Well in this case definitively go for the honda civic if you like "fun to drive". 8th gen is the best for that (2006-2011), especially with a manual transmission. The speedometer is also digital, which is cool and surprisingly useful. Also if you have the money it's worth spending say 1k$ extra for one that will be lower mileage, but that's me I want to keep it until the end of time. You know best your situation, and great idea to get it checked out.
The 2009-2011 definitely seem to be the less problematic years in terms of issues. So yeah I'll stay within those years.. The fun to drive thing is definitely important for me! I like how the speedometer reduces the distance you have to look down and away from the road, as opposed to the ones where you look through the steering wheel. Thanks for all the help!
Day Walker already posted my compilations on this topic, so make sure to check those out, they are also linked below next to my profile.
Off the top of my head, the ideal years would be 2009-2011 Honda Civic and 2003-2008; 2011-2013 Toyota Corolla (automatic only). You might also want to check out the Toyota Matrix (basically a Corolla hatchback) from 2009-2013, but only the base model with the 1.8 engine.
Last thing to note, lots of Civics and Corollas specifically seem like good deals because they are salvage titles. Please don't buy a salvage car, pay the extra couple thousand and get a proper clean title vehicle that passes a pre-purchase inspection.
Good luck!
Hello Mate!
For me I would recommend Honda Civic
Because I've experienced driving a Honda Civic.. And My experience In Driving A Honda Civic is, it is So Fun To Drive, Its Reliable, and etc...
The 5th Generation: "1995 Honda Civic"
