Hello all. I have a 99 ML430 W163 with 205k. My ML makes a very distinctive intermittent loud groaning noise at low speed (5-12 MPH) occasionally. The noise is almost always apparent when first driving the car out of the driveway, resulting in a turn, but it can also do it when going straight at low speed. The noise is immediately stopped when applying the brakes
Cold or warm engine, doesn't matter. We originally thought it was the power steering system, but I completely changed out the system with MB fluid and not a thing changed. Though it could be a power steering issue, the fact that the noise is instantly silenced by applying brakes allures me to that system. My dad never changed the brake fluid on the thing so I would not be suprised whatsoever if thats where the issue is.
There are no lights or codes relating to the brake modules and systems of the car.
Here is the link to the sounds: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PbsTF5KumkcHcjdkYOoOQrf7-FulE0xD/view?usp=sharing
The noise comes from the front, it sound like it is more towards the left (drivers) side of the car where the majority of the braking system lives and is loudest from the outside.
I believe my father replaced the booster vacuum hose, but nothing really changed. We also checked the brake fluid level which is fine. No hard ETS/ABS light or codes.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
Can be a wheel bearing. CV joint.
I don't believe the noise would be related to those parts if applying brakes (even minimally) instantly silences the noise.
It's possible. Braking changes the dynamic.
Being super complex, you’ll need to find a specialist who works on German vehicles.
You can start to pinpoint the noise yourself, using this technique -
Rather than guessing and changing parts. Take the car to a mech that can perform a proper diagnosis
