Scotty what is your opinion of auto start/stop disablers. Are they illegal and if you were to get one which do you like. I am planning on purchasing a new Tacoma in the near future and would like to know if they’re worth it.
The problem with those aftermarket disablers is typically they plug into the OBD2 diagnostic port. As Scotty has stated many times, that port is designed for temporary diagnostic use only, not for continuous use by aftermarket add-ons. In fact a poorly designed gadget can damage your vehicle's complex electrical system whether it plugs into the OBD2 port or is directly wired in.
If the Tacoma allows the driver turn off the start/stop system with the existing controls I would just get into the habit of doing that when you fire up the engine. That's the safest option.

You can tune a Tacoma if it has an auto stop/start function to permanently turn it off without risking damage to the OBDII port. Car Tuning - Custom Engine Tuners & Car Tuning Computers - JEGS High Performance It'll probably cost $300 or so, and it's being tuned by a professional. I'm pretty sure it's just an add-on that comes standard on higher-end Toyota models. Barebones Toyotas probably don't have that feature, like fleet vehicles. Heck, I bought a 2017 Mustang brand new and it didn't have the feature.
I don't know if Toyotas are the same, but on the rental car I drove with this feature I could completely prevent by simply not pushing the brake all way. Seems like a much cheaper and safer way to do it.
