When disconnecting a working car battery (to replace it, to clean it, to calculate parasitic battery draw for example) how can you avoid losing power to the on-board computer? On the occasions that I have done this, and before I realized that one shouldn't disconnect power from the computer, I noticed no effect, at least none that I was aware of. Would connecting a 12V battery charger to the battery leads serve to provide power while the battery is disconnected??

Or you could buy a memory saver that plugs into your OBD port. Cheap and easy.
