Axle Clicking on Gear/ Clutch feels like slipping

I drive a 2014 Nissan Versa manual, 120,000 miles.

My axle has been clicking for a while now, and lately the clutch feels like it might be slipping.

The axle only clicks if I am in gear and very dimly (almost null) on neutral or reverse.

I already tried greasing the axle at the axle nuts and even checked if it made the clicking noise without the tires. I also changed the brake pads/ checked if the shield thing was hitting the rotors.

Might this be just the case of a bad cv axle or will I need a new tranny? I think I can get the clutch done, but I don't know if it is related to the axle click sound.

Any advise?

Thanks Smile

Are the axle CV joint boots torn? That's when they usually start clicking due to loss of grease and being exposed to grit and dirt. It would not affect the clutch.

Thanks for the quick answer, brother. The boots look fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if the grease in there is dirty as I the main street in my town has been under repair for a year and a half now. I am glad the chances of changing the clutch might not be as big if it is axle related. It sounds like I will have to replace both axles to rule a lot of stuff out, do you think?

If boots are not torn it really shouldn't matter if you're driving in a dusty/dirty environment. I would verify where the clicking is coming from before throwing parts at the problem.

any difference in the sound when you're turning left/right?

The clicking comes from the inside part of the cv axle (I don't know if I am describing it right, but is on the "interior" of the car, not from the tire side).

it's simply called the inner cv joint, but you would typically replace the entire axle.

I would only replace the noisy side. You're not really saving any time by doing both, and the other one can still last a while.

Can water affect this as well? It floods regularly here as well.

yes water isn't good when it gets inside bearings

Sounds like you're talking about the inner CV joints where the axles connect to the transmission. If the boots leak then flooding could certainly affect them though I'd think you'd have other problems if the car had been in deep water. It's also possible the noise is coming from inside the transmission instead of from the CV joints.

That's my biggest fear. I hope it doesn't.

Update: My brother (mechanic) will be taking a look at it once he comes down to Texas. I hope it's just a matter of getting new cv axles.
