Bad valve clearance causing oil burning?

2008 Honda Accord 4 cylinder with a little over 200k miles.  My friend has to add about a quart of oil every 700-1000 miles.

The engine is dry with no leaks and I replaced the pcv valve with a new oem one, but no improvement.  I just chalked it up to age and since it goes fine, I told her to change the oil every 3000 miles and check the oil every week and add as needed.

The engine sounds fine but it does look like it's an engine that needs the valves checked and adjusted as needed, and I know this has never been done.  Could this be causing oil burning to this extent?

Thanks

No, the rings are probably worn out.  Or it could be the valve stem seals are shot, too.

Thanks! That's what I figured that it's just from a worn out engine, but it's been trucking along like that for at least the last 30k miles and as long as she remembers to top off the oil I think she'll be fine!

Valve adjustment wouldn't affect oil consumption, in my experience. Before I'd do any valve adjustment (the need for which would be indicated by a lot of top-end ticking), I'd do a wet-dry compression check (Scotty has a video on this process) which would show whether it was the rings or valve stem seals, and how good or bad they are. It's something that is pretty quick, easy and cheap to do.

Maybe as a recommendation, your friend should get in the habit that I had when I had well-loved cars.
EVERY time you fill up with gas, check the oil. Keep a couple quarts in the trunk.
