  • Hi Scotty,

unfortunately, I am not able to change my daughter mind, because she wants to buy a Beetle. They are very expensive to buy and I am sure more expensive to own. We found one Beetle 2014 with TDI (Turbo Diesel Engine) with 46k miles. The previous did all service at the dealer and no accidents however in the CARFAX report I saw 6 months ago the Radiator Fan Motor have been replaced.

I assume the  car started to overheat and the dealer figured out the fan was not working and replace it.

if my assumption is correct, if the fan stoped working, can this cause a long-term damage to the engine? And how I can verify if the engine overheated at one point of time? I am worry if I buy it and few months down the road, the casket will blowout!

the last question, does the beetle have any protection system to should down the engine before it get damaged from overheat?

thank you.

If she wants it, let her buy and fix it with her money.

Yes, they tend to fall apart and are expensive to repair.

no accidents

You can't count on Carfax for that. Not all accidents are reported to them.

Quite likely.

That depends on how badly the engine overheated. You can't verify whether it overheated in the past unless it has a blown head gasket or other damage related to overheating. You need to have a good mechanic give it a thorough inspection before purchase.

Not that I've heard of.

As @g-t suggested, if she wants a fundamentally unreliable car like that so badly let her buy it and repair it with her own money.
