Hey Scottie,
My wife and I have been looking to upgrade to a large used SUV for our family of 6 (all boys - 2 teens, 1 preteen and a 5 year old all boys) we currently own a 2012 Odyssey. We’ve been looking at either a Ford Expedition (2015 - 2019) or Chevy Suburban XL/GMC Yukon XL (2015 - 2019). I’m no fan of the Eco Boost engines by Ford and I’m no fan of GM’s quality. These seem to be the only vehicles large enough to accommodate our family. Which of these would you recommend or is there something else out there that we should look at? Thanks for all the great advice 🙂
How long do you plan to keep and how many trouble-free miles would you hope it would last for?
Also, are you open to leasing?
Thanks. I want to drive until the wheels fall off or engine gives out :). Not a fan of leasing anything.
I would recommend the Toyota Sequoia, neither the Expedition nor Suburban are good choices long term.
Also, what's wrong with the Odyssey?
Thanks for the reply The Odyssey needs some work done to the suspension (rear shocks and I think the front tie rods are bad because it knocks really loud when we turn right or left) and the transmission it seems to conk into the next gear (best description I can give lol). I took it to the dealer a couple years ago to get plugs and coils changed out for a recall issue but I’m still not confident driving it on long 1100 mile road trips to visit family.
If you plan to buy and keep for as long as possible and put as many trouble-free miles on it (well beyond 100, 150, 200,000+ miles), then those vehicles don’t have the best chance of getting you there. If reliability is what you prioritize the most, go with the Toyota Sequoia. Otherwise, I recommend you just lease the Expedition or Suburban vehicles; for long term and with both GM and Ford quality low these days neither are good buys.
Thanks. I’m definitely looking for reliability. I don’t want to have to buy anything for another 8 - 10 years if I can help it.
Have you ever looked at the Toyota Sequioas? Those are pretty big too. Also you should look in the Toyota Siennas. Otherwise, it's best to lease to Fords, Chevy, or GMC because you don't have to deal with problems.
Thanks I think I’ll look onto one of those. Any particular year I should or should not look into? I was trying to stay in a range of the last 5 to 6 years but nothing newer than a 2019.
The years you're looking for are the best years because they worked their tweaks.
Avoid 2017+ Siennas because of the 8 speed automatic, 2016 and before is a good bet
@Kerem Oh I thought he was looking for the Sequioas lol. Avoid Siennas with the 8 speeds just like Kerem said.
Toyota Sequoia hands down, they run forever and have hardly any repair issues.

The toyota sienna or the toyota sequoia. I would personally go with sequoia, because that is an suv and you can get one cheap enough. Get the 2018 sequoia because the front end was redesigned. It gets crappy gas mileage because of the v8, so if you care about gas mileage, get the toyota sienna.
