Best way to check out used vehicle without bringing mechanic?

I'm buying this 2005 GMC Yukon XL with 178k miles for $3000. It is clean title. I'm not really a mechanic but I learned some of Scotty's videos and I have a scan tool so I know how to check it out and test drive first but seller claims the truck runs and drives good no check engine light and ice cold AC so that's not the problem I think. I had a friend who is a good mechanic but he's too busy never respond.

no check engine light

Don't believe anything a seller tells you. They could have cleared codes to turn off a check engine light but you won't know unless you check it out with your own scan tool.

Another thing on this topic, you should see the check engine light light up when the key is turned to the "on" position, prior to starting the engine. If you don't, the owner may have removed the bulb, or disabled the light in some way to prevent it from ever coming on. So, check that the check engine light turns on when the key is in the on position.

but seller claims the truck runs and drives good

My advice: when seller doesn't let you scan (obd) and test-drive the car, say friendly 'goodbye' and walk away...

He could be present when you scan and drive the car, to prevent you stealing the car.

Some healthy mistrust could help you save money.
