I have heard about you through a friend, and have been enjoyung ypur videos. I just subscribed today. I have a 2015 BMW X5 35i xdrive. Aprox 130,000 miles. I was exiting one highway and entering another highway. I had to excelerate to merge in front of a semi. As I did, the car went into neutral. Thank God, I had a huge pull off. I tried to get it to go back in drive, not such luck. I tried to turn the car off and restart it. It would not restart. It would not go back into neutral to get it onto our trailer. We know now how to get it in neutral, which is not easy on the side of the road. We had both batteries checked and were told they both tested in excellent condition. We are not thinking starter because it was running and no problems starting that morning. The error message on the panel was "Starter/Ignition Malfunction". I contacted the dealership and they have no recalls, and have not heard of this happening to an X5. Online there is mention of it happening to an M8. My car has been undrivable for over a week and no closer to finding a resolution. This was/is a life safety issue. My sister-in-law has the exact same year and model. I am very concerned because, I do not think she is capable of reacting quickly enough not to get in an accident.
Any suggestions or assistance would be a blessing. I am a disabled person on a limited income, so D.Y.I. is almost a must. And yes, I don't think I will keep the car when I get it up and running. I only got the car because my car got destroyed in the hail storm and I bought it for what my brother could buy it back from when it also got hit by the hail storm. To many things about the car that makes me now ubcomfortable driving it.
If I remember correctly these cars had alot if issues with the wiring harness and the wiring it's self for the transmission. Check the harness at the housing for breaks and damage.valso back trace them as far as you can go. I also heard something about the tcm going bad but never witnessed that in person
