Hi Scotty , I have a 2018 Honda Civic sedan LX with cvt transmission, no turbo , 2 litre engine with 66,000 kilometres on it. Bought brand new.
When I back up and touch the brakes lightly the front brakes make a squealing noise. Sometimes when stopping going forward but not so much forward as it does backing up. I checked my oil life it’s 70% it reads under that a code 09. I checked my Manuel it says 09 is check braking system. It’s such a tiny squel I don’t want to go to the Honda dealer and get ripped off saying I need a big repair when it may just be brake rotor rust imbedded in the brake pads. What should I do. Thanks mike Pelkonen. Venise en quebec Canada
1. If the brake pads have a high metal count (particularly with large flakes), well, the squeal is the result of the composition of those pads. New, higher quality brake pads (which you can install yourself, it isn't that difficult), such as Akebono's, will alleviate the squeal, if cheap pads are the source of the squeal;
2. The pads will squeal when the pads are worn. There's a metal wear indicator that is exposed when the brakes are worn. A visual inspection would reveal this. The solution is the same as above: Replace the pads;
3. Is everything (rotors, calipers, hoses) tight and in its proper place? Loosey goosey parts will do this to. Solution: Visual inspection;
4. Humidity generates brake sounds. On my old Camry, there's an audible groan until the pads wipe the humidity off the rotors.
5. Who says you have to take this issue to a dealer, if it's not warranty work?
That's what I can tell you.
inspect your brake pads and see if you need new ones. If your brake pads are fine then you can try to clean the brake rotor with brake cleaner make sure you spray the brake cleaner on the rotor and not the pad. Sometimes brake rotors build up grime and brake dust and often they just need a good cleaning. You don't have to take it to Honda you can always find a good mechanic to replace your break pads if necessary.
are the brake pads worn down to the squealers?
