Break In Period of New Cars Question

Is it true that a new car must have it's engine broken-in? I heard a story years ago about a guy who bought a brand new BMW 850 and he he revving it hard and peeling out with just 100 miles and his engine went bad. How many miles should I break in a new car for?  Should I keep it at always under 2,000 rpm? Do I do local and/or highway driving?

For the car longevity, yes.

Both.

Refer to the car user's manual for details.

30 years ago, maybe. No longer required.

These modern motors are ready to go from factory. Obviously wouldn’t redline the thing but you got to think about all the fleet trucks companies buy and I promise you those trucks don’t go through any “break in” period. They go straight to work and most last a long time when taken care of. The only thing I would do is the first oil change @ 3k mi.

After the initial 20min engine break in, I've always gone with avoiding keeping a steady rpm for any extended period (ie highway driving) & taking it easy for the first couple thousand miles.

Generally it used to be 5k but 2500 seems fine.

It depends on the car and the owners manual always has information on how many miles the brake-in period is and what to do and what to avoid during that time. I would say 1000 miles is a safe bet in general, but again your specific vehicle can be more or less. But at the very least avoid sudden acceleration and sudden braking (going based off of the owner manual for one of my cars) which seems like a wise thing to do.

Out of curiosity, what about motorcycles? I don't own one and never have ridden one. How does the break-in period go for them?

The same with cars. Especially the new models.

So give or take about 1,000 miles?

I was doing some further research and wanted to know if break-in oil is good to break in an engine?

This is not in owners manuals but some say that when you drive your car out of the dealership to rev your RPM to 300 for 15 minutes in order to seal the piston rings. It is also said that first 500 miles, one should change the oil and then change it again at the regular interval. Is this true?

Why change the oil at 3,000 miles? Is it the first initial oil change in order to get and metal shaving out from the break-in period? (Prevent metal shavings from spreading)
