Hello everyone, I was working on my 53 studebaker trying to remove the soft line when I didn’t realize the soft line was twisting the heck out of the metal brake line… until it was too late and the metal line broke right at the fitting. How hard is it to flare the brake line and add a new fitting? I’ve never done it myself and I don’t really have any experience. Like I said the line broke right at the fitting, so I shouldn’t need a whole new line, just the fitting. What tools will I need and how hard is it 😅. Thank you for any help you can give me.
If you're going to be working on 70-year-old cars you'll definitely want to learn how to flare brake lines. There are plenty of instructional videos on youtube showing you how to do it.
You might want to run a complete new brake line using NiCopp tubing (nickel-copper alloy). It is very easy to bend and flare, much easier than steel, and won't rust.
You'll need a decent tool that can make double-flares. I prefer the type with individual dies (like ATD 5483) since it's easier to use in tight spots under the car, but any good flaring tool will do the trick.
