I have been considering changing my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude for a small econobox car since I have moved closer to work. I am not doing as much driving anymore want to save money on gas and maintenance since I have been spending a lot on the move. When an issue occurs in the car it ends up being a heavy cost to maintain. What are some good recommendations for a new or used (within the last 2-3 years) econobox that would be worth exploring?  looking for sedans or hatchbacks primarily that are a good value and are not to much of a compromise.

I'd say a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic would be your best bet if you're not a fan of maintaining vehicles that much.

Though I know these are both good options I have always felt that they were just a little boring. Probably will think about goin out and trying them out again to see how I end up feeling about them!

you might like the Toyota Corolla cross

I would consider it more since I think they are pretty good but not really looking for a car in that size range. Appreciate the option though and will write it down as something I may have to go and try!

What size are you looking for?

looking more for a sedan or a small compact car vs a midsize!

Toyota Corolla & Honda Civic would be my top two choices. An edge for the Civic for me, just because I like the overall package of the Civic. But An edge to the Corolla for projected slight lower cost maintenance.

Mazda 3 or Subaru Impreza would be my next.

I have always liked the design of Subarus but since I don't know how to drive manual it was my main deterrent hearing that their automatic transmissions were kind of just ok. Also have to consider that my girlfriend does not know how to drive stick so I am focusing on automatics. Will have to go out and try it out and see how it goes or if I end up going back for a car in similar size to what I currently have. I appreciate the comments and options!

Depends on your definition of boring; if boring means a car that will turn on every time you start it and take you where you want to go without problems then boring is good. And both options are the good boring. You won't regret any of them. I prefer the Civic over the Corolla and I test drove both and the Civic the interior design of the 11th generation makes it roomier compared to the Corolla.

if I end up going back for a car in similar size to what I currently have.

Even if you want another SUV again consider a Toyota or Honda SUV; different options and reliable. Rav4 or Highlander for example.
