My original dip stick is a metal flappy stick with a yellow plastic ring for pulling. Is it common for the plastic ring on a dip stick to break off, leaving the flappy metal stuck down in the tube, on an old car? The oil change guy did that. Is it his fault, so he should pay for the repair (old dip stick extraction and new dip stick)? Or is it just a thing that happens with old cars so I should eat it?

It sounds more like a problem with a poorly-designed 18-year-old part than the fault of the guy who changed the oil. Can you really hold him responsible when a cheaply-made plastic part gives out after nearly two decades of underhood heat and cold? (Did he tell you about it or did you discover the problem for yourself when trying to check the oil?)

The oil guy mentioned it. He said his company would pay for it. I just wondered if I should actually take them up on it because it might have broken anyway.

Hey if they're willing to fix it, why not? For them it would be an inexpensive goodwill gesture since it happened on their watch even though probably not their fault the part failed.
