Broken rubber retainer for driver-side inside door mechanism of 2000 Ford Contour Sport

My father recently purchased a 2000 Ford Contour Sport for less than $2,500.  It's a four-door sedan with an automatic transmission and less than 107,000 miles on the odometer.  Unfortunately, my father wound up breaking the rubber retainer for the car's driver-side inside door mechanism.  Can someone give me advice on how my father can fix the problem?  Sadly, it's my understanding that the cable assembly is practically impossible to come by in this day and age.  😔

Your picture shows a control cable, often called a Ford latch cable. Find the full OEM Ford part number for the part you need to ensure fitment, then you can search Ebay with relative ease. If you're unable to find the control cable from Ebay, you can still go the salvage yard route. Many door parts are interchangeable on Ford Contours and Mercury Mystiques made between 1995-2000 and share the same part numbers. Hope this helps

Have you tried looking for a used one in a junkyard?

@chucktobias No offense, Mr. Tobias, but my father is pushing 80.

We have no way of knowing that kind of thing until people tell us. It's not necessary to physically go through junkyards, you can frequently find used parts on eBay and you may be able to find a used part through car-part.com.

then you should fix it for him.

@imperator No offense, MountainManJoe, but for all intents and purposes, my father has taken care of the issue in question. He jury-rigged something up. How long the stuff will hold up is admittedly a question mark.

why would I be offended?
