Buying a used car

Topic starter

I'm torn between a few used vehicles all from dealerships.  2017 Chevy Malibu, 40k miles, $13,750, 2018 Ford Focus, 53k miles, $11,900 and 2014 Honda CR-V, 76k miles, $13,500.  I prefer an suv but I'm concerned about the higher mileage, what do you think?

For reliability, go with the Honda CR-V.  Be sure to cross-check with our sticky on Toyota/Honda Common Problems below and be sure to have an independent, honest mechanic check out before you buy.  I can’t comment on price since that is not my forte.

CRV would be my pick, traditional engine/transmission, and resale would be higher too

Honda CR-V hands down.   Malibu not even close 2nd to the CR-V, and certainly not a Focus, they're just plain terrible (they're throw away cars)

Out of those your best bet would be the CR-V.

1. The Focus is discontinued, is nearly worthless (same generation 2014 2015 models can be found for $3000-$4000), and is an overall cheaply made car.

2. The Chevy Malibu is a Chevy, the quality just isn't there.

The 2014 CR-V had was the last model year of the 5 speed automatic, relatively trouble free. There were some engine grinding with the new Earthdreams design in 2012-2014 models but nothing really mechanically wrong with it. The price is a bit high I would definitely haggle. Make sure to have a mechanic check it out for issues so you know you aren't buying someone else's problems. Keep in mind 2014 is pre-refresh, from a generation now 10 years old. You want to haggle with that in mind. For more information on how to buy a used car, check out the Used Car Buying Guide linked below, or "I need to buy a vehicle" section of the FAQ. Chris Fix on youtube also has a good playlist on buying used cars.

Good luck!

Honda CRV hands down. The Ford and the Chevy are terrible cars. Ford has some decent vehicles and some horrible ones. The Ford Focus is one of the horrible ones. All Chevy (or GMC) vehicles made after 2007 are crap except for their 2500 series trucks. Still have the Honda CRV checked out tho because it is 7 years old and you never know how the previous owner treated it
