Hi Scotty!
Long time fan!, first time writing. Working on my friends 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Had to replace one of the caliper slide pins that was rusted and seized up good. Question, do you absolutely need the rubber bushing that goes at the end of the slide pins? Im sure its better to have it on and it serves some purpose, but the pins had alot of trouble moving on this car with the bushings on. Plenty of miles and rust on the car. I took the bushings off of the end of the pins and they slide much better. Seems to work just fine. Is okay to have them off? What do these rubber bushings at the end of the pins even do Scotty???
Excited to hear back from you.
You don’t mean the mean the rubber covers? I don’t know which bushings you mean. Can you post a photo? If you’re having trouble with your calipers moving, most people just replace them. They aren’t that expensive.
Correct, Not the dust cover on the end of the caliper pin that has the threading for the bolt. Im referencing the rubber cylinder sleeve that some cars have that goes on the end of the caliper pin. Here is a link below for an ebay item that pictues them. My Calipers and caliper pins are moving fine when i remove these rubber sleeves. What are they for and is it a big deal if i took them out? Everything works much better.
Alot of youtube mechanices or forums say they are to prevent a rattleing noise? But brakes sound just fine and work fine without them? Wanted a professional opinion
so you mean the black cylinders at the bottom of the image? And those go over the slide pins?
They either reduce noise and chatter, or help prevent brake drag.
Don't worry though .... Hydraulic brake calipers exert hundreds of pounds of force and will have absolutely no problem with sliding. These rubber sleeves will in NO way impede the function of your brakes. I would leave them there.
Thank you! Appreciate the advise!
