[Solved] Which Toyota driveline fluids should I use

2015 Highlander LE V6 98,000mi

Ordered Diff Oil from dealer (75W-85) and did the change today.

Both cans said 75W-85 so I figured they were the same. The fluid in the 1st can that I put in the rear was red, thought it was odd but it didn’t click that maybe that was supposed to be for the front until I opened the second can. Was surprised to find the second can of oil was just oil colored-put in front transfer case.

Is it just dye, or are there different additives for rear diff and transfer case?

Is it something I should redo, do early next time, or no problem at all?

It has to be better than what was in the rear diff before at least I guess-Thanks.

The red can says “ GL-5 75W-85 for LSD and transfer “ pt# 08885-02606

The oil color can says “GL-5 75W-85” does not specify for LSD and transfer pt# 08885-02506

So they are not the same oils. "LSD" in this context would most likely mean "Limited Slip Differential" rather than a certain hallucinogenic drug.

Therefore, the red-colored oil contains limited-slip friction modifiers for limited slip differentials, and transfer cases that contain such a differential.

So any of your differentials and/or transfer case that specify limited-slip oil be used should be using the red-colored oil. Open differentials would use the non-LSD oil.

On older vehicles the limited-slip additive would not cause a problem with open differentials but modern ones may well be more finicky, so use the correct oil for the application.

I love that the dude making LSD jokes can tell me more than the manual, the dealer, and the internet 😂

I guess I’ll just redo it soon- still cheaper than having it done, I learned something, and I actually enjoyed doing it. Thanks for your sharing your expertise.

Straight from the maintenance section of the 2015 Highlander owner's manual:

I believe it says right on the fluid can ... LT or LX right?

In my defense…I read all that, ordered that, and there was a giant dealer sticker over the right side of the front of the LX can (that was apparently wrong) hustled through some work on the one day I had to do it. I guess I really don’t need an answer as to how big a deal it is…

I hate it when they put stickers over important stuff.

How do the labels compare on the two containers? Do they have different part numbers? List different specifications other than viscosity?
