[Solved] Car battery cold crank amp

Topic starter

I have a 2020 Camry LE with 49k miles. Last week took my car to the dealership for an oil change. They told me the battery needs to be replaced and the cold cranking amp is only 646. I read some article saying 600 amp is enough. I don't have any crank start problems at all, but I am moving from TN to TX next weekend so I just wanted to well prepare for it. Should the battery be replaced?

It's unlikely (but not impossible) that a 2-year-old battery would have gone bad already. It's most likely the dealer is lying to you, trying to sell you something you don't need. You'd have to check factory specs but 646 CCA sounds like it should be plenty of capacity. What does the label on the battery say the CCA is supposed to be? You could always elect to have the battery tested at an independent shop to confirm.

I just checked. The battery CCA is supposed to be 562.

Sounds like an unusual specification, but if that's what it says that's what it is. So these guys are telling you that battery is bad because it tested out at 646, well over factory spec! They're evidently a bunch of lying thieves. You might want to find somewhere else, preferably a good independent mechanic (not a chain shop), to have your maintenance done. (If you're moving out of state you'll need to do that anyway. Avoid stealerships as well as chains.)

Typical dealership hose job.  Check your oil drain plug to see if they even tightened it up.
