Hello,
My relative’s ‘06 Corolla 225k miles, is jerking and stalls while driving and when at idle, but when in neutral position it doesn’t do that, took it to auto parts store was scanned for check engine light and throws a code P0304 cylinder 4 misfire, bought new spark plugs and one egnition coil, when I was trying to replace it took out the number 4 ignition coil and it was covered with oil, also checked other ignition coils and the other three had some oil. Any suggestions what this can be? can it be valve cover gasket? And advices and links to videos on YouTube will greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.
just replace the gasket with a new one. (tube seals too)
Get a good quality silicone rubber one (eg Fel-pro)
Don't put anything on it. Clean up the surfaces really well.
Torque it carefully.
the gaskets usually come with instructions anyway
Valve cover gasket is the likely source of oil on the plugs and/or coils, it really wouldn't be coming from anywhere else.
I wish I can attach pictures to show you but I don’t know how.
the cover gasket looks different than the one I bought
can I use lacquer thinner or acetone or isopropyl alcohol to wipe off the debris/stickiness from old gasket and and cover lid inside from the oil all around it?
Fel Pro makes very good gaskets. Use the lacquer thinner to clean up, the acetone is too fast and won't stay liquid long enough to loosen up the old gasket crud. Alcohol won't cut it. If you can, always use your VIN to match parts to. Call AutoZone with your VIN to make sure you have the correct gasket set
tell me what is wrong with my comment that made you feel inclined to down vote it
You never use sealant on valve cover gaskets, that's why.
Allow me to explain. When scotty made the video about the shop who did a valve cover gasket job wrong, he redid the job and used 3M weatherstrip adhesive on the valve cover BEFORE PUTTING THE GASKET IN THE GROOVE so it would stay in place when it was placed on the engine.
What I used on my engine when I did the same job was use Permatex ultra black to do the same thing.
Haven't had an issue.
What I'm assuming you think I'm advocating for is the use of the Permatex as a SUBSTITUTE of a gasket, which I never said.
here's the link to the video.
I know.
just use grease. I hate cleaning up that RTV crap.
Absolutely agree.
As others said, good quality gasket only, put sealer only where there are seams between mating surfaces. Just did my Honda Element, used a good Felpro and 6K miles later dry as a bone!
Hello,
replacing valve gasket in ‘06 Corolla for the first time, when removed the lid from the motor the cover gasket looks different than the one I bought, it’s 4 cylinder the old gasket that’s on the car is green color with 6 tube rings (O rings) 4 a little larger where spark plugs go in and 2 o rings around where the screws go in all in one piece with a gasket, and the one I bought at autozone is black gasket fel pro brand with detached 4 tube rings, called autozone and was told they gave me the right one, Any one knows if that’s okay to put on the one I purchased, and also can I use lacquer thinner or acetone or isopropyl alcohol to wipe off the debris/stickiness from old gasket and and cover lid inside from the oil all around it?
I wish I can attach pictures to show you but I don’t know how.
thank you.
Hello, 06 corolla, what kind of glue to use on valve cover gasket? and do you apply it all over the gasket or just in each edge of the gasket?
Thank you!
DO NOT use sealer or glue on a valve cover gasket.
Prep surface really well make sure it's clean. Buy a actually replacement gasket but don't be cheap. Fel pro are good as said . Gasket maker is tricky and easy to mess up if you haven't done it. I've always used permatex ultra black gasket Maker
Fel-pro does make good silicone gaskets. When I did mine, I used the permatex ultra black to secure the gasket in place so when I turned it over, it didn't fall out. Put it in the groove where the gasket would go before you slip the gasket in. Prevents it from slipping out of place as you put it on too, so it won't leak.
I've heard to do my valve cover gasket, and the dealer found out was injectors and fuel rail for my misfiring r33 skyline. I've seen oily plugs on a 2015 tundra with high miles before I did.
