[Solved] Car Scanner: Parameters and What to Look For?

Hey Scotty,

Can you make a video showing what parameters to look for when plugging in your scan tool to a car?  I haven’t seen any from you, or maybe I missed it.  I have a nice Autel Mx808 scan tool, but I need to know from you and the Forum community what parameters to read when hooking up a scan tool to the car, essentially a 101-type tutorial.

I just need to know which key parameters to read and what numbers to look for (with respect to those parameters).  This will go a long way in maintaining my vehicles.

Here are some videos I found with a quick search.

Make sure that your vehicle type is properly detected. Push the "Diagnostics" button and run an Auto Scan.  It will then tell you if there's any problems. If no issues come up then you're fine.

The manual shows everything step by step

Thank you @mountainmanjoe, I had looked there before, but I just wanted to know which specific parameters to look at and the value range for them.  I know Scotty in the past looked at Fuel Trim (as an example).

For me, I want to track the parameters over time, so even though it might be passing now it might also be getting worse.  My main concern is Engine so which Engine parameters should I look at and monitor over time?

If your car is running well, then you don't need the scanner. Just enjoy driving 🙂

I guess less is more, and/or best not to worry or over-worry.

I was just trying to educate myself more - that’s all.

Don't worry. It's the vehicle computer's job to monitor things, and if something is out of whack, it will turn on the money light. Automotive troubleshooting is a deep rabbit hole and there beginner books you can read if you're interested.

If you have any issues at all, we will be happy to help. The scanner will come in very handy when it's time to start troubleshooting.
