Hi Scotty. My car (2015 corolla) seemed to have a lot of vibrations. I took it to a mechanic that I trust, and they couldn't figure it out but said the tyres looked a little scalloped so that replacing them would probably sort the issue. I then took it to a tyre store who said the tyres were "very scalloped". They told me to run my fingers along the tyre in one direction, and then in the other direction, and I would notice "more resistance" running in one direction, hence they were "scalloped" and causing vibrations. To me, I thought it seemed normal that tyres would wear in that way since the wheels mainly travel in one direction? Anyway, on the mechanic's advice I bought a full set of pirellis and had an alignment done, but notice very little difference. Was I ripped off? The old tyres had plenty of tread left.
To make matters weirder, after about 1200 km on the tyres, I went to get my registration sorted. I noticed on their spreadsheet that the tyres on the right side were both 7 mm of tread, while the tyres on the left were 3 and 4mm of tread. This could be the mechanics being wrong, since I really don't trust the outfit that did the registration (they up sold me a bunch of stuff, and said the car had a belt when I know it has a chain). Otherwise, maybe I have a suspension issue? It hasn't been picked up by two separate mechanics if so, so it seems unlikely. That said, I do notice the car vibrates a bit even at low speeds on smooth surfaces, and I really feel potholes and imperfections in the road.
Sorry for the essay!!
Looking at a tire wont help.
Put them all on a balancer to check for bent rims or oblong tires.
