Hey!
My Audi A3 2004 (115 000 km) featuring the 1.6 litre BGU gasoline engine burns 1 litre of oil per 2000km.
I currently use full synthetic 5W30 oil. Will my oil burning be reduced if I change to a thicker oil, 0W40 oil as an example? And could it damage my engine in any way? Thanks 🙂
A lot of European cars use 0W40. Check your owner's manual. That might actually be one of the recommended oils.
Don't do it.
The engine was designed to work with a certain viscosity (thickness) of oil. If you're going from a 5W to a 0W the engine will consume more oil when it's cold. When it warms up the oil will become too thick 40 versus 30 and cause too much internal engine pressure.
Have a trusted mechanic to a compression test on the engine to see how badly it's worn inside.
If you must keep the car, install an oil catch can is that will capture some of the oil before it gets burnt in the engine.
@rallyfoz
Prescribed oil grade for your car:
All-season +25 to -25 °C 10W-30 10W-40 15W-40 15W-30
Winter -35 to +5 °C 5W-30 5W-40
Summer -5 to +45 °C 20W-40 20W-30 25W-30 25W-40
F.S.
There's a chance it will slightly (maybe noticeably) reduce oil consumption. It's almost guaranteed long term use will damage your engine. Best and cheapest is a fix or trade.
I agree with RAllyFOZ.
If I were you, I would not change the oil. Go for thicker oils, does not do that much in term of reduction in oil consumption.
