Changing Rear brake Pads

Hey there Scotty , I plan to change rear brake pads on my 2017 Mazda 6 and was wondering if I need to do anything with the electronic parking brake or do I just use that plus sign tool to push piston back in and leave E brake alone? Would you also recommend leaving the cap off of brake reservoir when pushing piston back in to not have too much pressure? Thank you !

You might need to unlock the electronic parking brake to be able to service the brake pads and retract the pistons without damaging anything. My 2013 Ford Fusion had an electric parking brake and it had a sequence that needed to be done to unlock it. I figured it out from a Google search. Those things are so stupid. I don't understand how a lever and cable became more expensive than electric motors and more computer programming. 


I would also leave the cap off the reservoir to avoid any back pressure. Don't leave it off for long, brake fluid loves water vapor and readily pulls it out of the air.


Yeah I seen the sequence on how to retract the parking, I just wasn't sure if there was anything I needed to do to avoid damage. Would I need a special tool still to push the pistons back ? And yea I agree on how they couldn't just leave the lever and cable lol . Ah yes, ill be sure to be very quick about it, would hate to get water or air in the system. Also, doing the sequence again should enable the electronic brake again correct?


If it's anything like my Fusion was, you gotta rent a fancy caliper presser from AutoZone that twists and presses the piston in at the same time. If there are multiple shallow, circular indentations in the face of the piston, you will need that tool. Compressing them alone will damage the caliper. Also a stupid design change. Haha. Repeating the sequence will make the parking brake go back into service.
