Hello, I have a 98 cherokee xj 4x4, 230k kms, when turning sharp (left or right) its clunking (rotational rhythmic clunk), specially at low speeds when you make tight turns, or even a 90degree corner at normal turning speed.
I’ve replaced axle U joints and bearings (as preventive maintenance), also reinforced the power steering support on the body (on these trucks it breaks over time), steering also has some play on it about 1 1/2 - 2 inch on either side.
curiously the only time when the sound ceased was a time when the front shaft was off due to maintenance (steering felt way softer those days), mechanics say that the front shatf u joints are good, don’t know how it can be related.
the guys that work on the truck won’t figure out what can be, they’ve checked the front diff already too.
nothing seems loose apparently.

Front ball joints my guess. Have replaced them on many makes and models. Generally the tires are worn on the edges from bouncing up and down from the loose joints. They clunk in turns at slower speeds.
