Have a 2005 Toyota corolla from 2005, with 147,400 miles. It had the engine light on and my bro used a small scan tool and the code P0701 showed up. Will I have to take this to a mechanic or is it some simple fix?

Is your fluid level good? If yes, I’d get it looked at by a transmission specialist or a mechanic who specialises in Toyota vehicles.
Also, reset code and see if/when it comes back, it may not. Has trans had regular service (fluid/filter changes)? If yes, have fluid filter changed again if it has been over 50k since last change for good measure (proper maintenance).
