Colorado vs Canyon vs Toyota

Hello,

I know you swear by the Tacoma but are there any major issues with the newer Colorado's or Canyon's, or you wouldn't even think of purchasing anything other than a Tacoma? I know GM's 1500 truck are crap, but I heard that the Tacoma is smaller than the colorado or canyon, and I'm in the market for a new truck and I don't want it too small because I have a 2001 Ford Ranger and it is very small and has no weight behind it.

See below:  they won’t last as long as the Tacoma’s and overtime the electronics can cause issues (electrical gremlins) - GM is not known for their electronics.  Also, the GM-designed 8-speed AT (8L45) in that truck and other GM vehicles has had numerous issues and was subject of a class action lawsuit.  I would be weary to own that transmission out of warranty.  Go with the Tacoma;  they cost more but they also will last longer with less fuss and issues than the Colorado/Canyon.  Also, they have better resale value.  Test drive one and see if you are OK with the size.

The 3.6L V6 engine (LGZ) in the Colorado/Canyon also has cylinder deactivation which can potentially wear out/damage the engine over time. It also has direct injection only and susceptible to carbon buildup on back of intake valves over time as well. The Tacoma does not have either of those issues (and still incorporates port injection to clean the back of the intake valves).

Scotty actually approves of the Colorado.

All said & done though, it’s still a GM, so don’t expect to hold up like a Toyota, long term.

That video shows the 1st Gen Colorado (MY 2004-2012). OP is asking about the 2nd Gen ones (MY 2015-present).

Consider F150 as well.

The Colorado and Canyon are famous for electrical and a lot of other problems.  Just check the internet.  If you think the Tacoma is too small, look at a Tundra.

This would be the ones I would consider:

Tacoma vs Tundra vs Ridgeline.

I'd stick to the Toyota myself. Not a GM fan.

Agree with everyone’s comments about electrical, although they have less electrical components to go bad than most cars (eg, no push button start - just a key you turn)

Other than that the midsize GM trucks are not a bad choice. Reviews say ride quality and acceleration are good.  Final assembly is in US (Missouri), unlike the Tacoma which has moved to Mexico. And I can’t imagine parts are going to be expensive, so it isn’t the end of the world if something does fail.

I’m not generally a GM fan, but you could do worse than a Colorado-Canyon. (FYI: the TFL guys just got a Canyon for a week-long test. Won’t tell you anything about reliability but should be a good first impression. Andre is usually a pretty straight shooter. )

The Colorado and Canyon are practically the same vehicles and here is Scotty's take on them.

Scotty is always right.
