Coolant sprayed in engine

I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid SE. The vehicle has had a prolonged leak for roughly the last 4 years from the Climate Control Thermostat and the contecting hoses. Hoses were replaced but not the thermostat itself. Mechanic thought it was the water pump Gameplan was to drive it until the wheels fell off. Had to top off the coolant every other week.

The car is typically a very smooth drive and yesterday the while coming to a stop the engine sputtered heavily and smoke poured out of the hood. When I opened the hood coolant had sprayed all over the engine near the coolant resevoir. I checked everywhere but could not find where the coolant sprayed from. All the hoses appeared to be intact. I did top of the coolant before I drove, the cap was tight. All of the coolant seemingly leaked out.

Planning on taking it into a mechanic this week. Just looking for insight and thoughts.

Well it had the spray from somewhere. I would advise pressure test. He didn't see him where the leak is. Now if you don't see any leaks that would mean it was coming out of the pressure cap because it had too much pressure. Meaning you have an overheating problem in the car. Not a leak itself but something that causes it to build up so much pressure. It comes flying over the radiator cap which only holds a certain amount of pressure
