Hi Scotty, greetings from croatia, love your chanel! I want to buy a new corolla, been to the dealers, they offered me one with the new 1.5 vvt 3 cyl N/A engine that has 123 HP, or one with the old 1.6 vvt 4 cyl N/A engine with 132 HP. What's your opinion? I'm planning to drive the car at least 7 years and estimated 130.000 miles (225.000 km). What is the wiser choice?

There is no replacement for displacement. Go 4cyl.

Did the 1.6L 1ZR-FAE have oil consumption issues where you are? If not, I’d choose that over the brand new 3cyl engine technology.

1.6L are 1ZR-FAE/FE. 2ZR-FAE/FE are 1.8L ones

Thank you! You’re right, typo. Now fixed!

3 cylinder engines in general are bad. Go with the 4 cylinder.

I've checked the forums in croatia and europe, no one has any complaints except of the acceleration, europe is in a small engine turbo hype, so if a car does not have a turbo it is not any good. I differ in opinion, I would rather have a N/A engine than a small turbo engine that is expensive to maintain and to fix. I'll check the forums once more to se if anything pops out, thanks for the quick reply! See you on youtube!

In general there has not been any major construction failures with the 3 cyl engines reported in europe by any car company, but the question is with the long term ownership costs, will you be able to fix the car at a reasonable price once it breaks down! I'm not so sure!

I would choose the 4 cylinder engine over the 3. At least it rides better and the fuel consumption should not be that much different. With that said, just make sure the model you buy does not suffer from oil consumption.

The reports I found is that the 1.6 132 HP does not suffer from oil consumption,at least the models sold in europe, but if someone has different data I would like them to share it. What are the differences betwen models sold in US and in Europe?

Greater the number of cylinders the better it is.

You probably mean 1.5 M15A-FKS engine. This one came out in 2020 so it is relatively new and unperfected. I advise stay away from it if you do not want to be a guinea pig for issues revealing.

I prefer 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engines. That is why took 2 years old 1.3L Auris few months ago.

I'd like better acceleration but that is what VVTI engines offer. They 'kick in' when you rev them high.
