I have recently read that the correct way to put a car in park is to engage the parking brake before putting the car in park, however, I have been parking for years by just putting the car in park, unless I park on the hill at which point I do engage the parking brake after putting the car in park. Is there any truth to this? Can you really harm your transmission? And what about the new cars that engage the parking brake automatically after you put the car in park?
The important thing is not parking brake first or trans in park first. The important thing is you foot on the brake pedal until both are accomplished. Your foot on the brake pedal holds the car perfectly still for the other things to be accomplished without drama, wear or danger.
please use the search. This has been discussed over and over.

then there's not much you can do about it. One of the reasons I hate this trend.
