For more context, I own a Mazda 3 2.3L with 5 speed Manual. Very RARELY do I notice a grind when shifting to second gear. And it doesn't happen everyday. It probably happens once every 1-2 weeks. Also, the car has 145000 miles and is on its original clutch. (though the throwout bearing is questionable, as I sometimes have to press the clutch twice before it lets me into reverse gear). Otherwise, it shifts without any issues no matter how hard I push it.
If the clutch is not quite releasing 100% you can experience that kind of symptom.
Could that be an issue with the Throwout bearing?
I completely agree with @chucktobias .
@Bm3 I do not think that a Throw-out bearing could be causing all of that. there's most likely a bigger issue like an issue with the clutch linkage...
but if you have been driving and grinding the gears for a while - you might have done quite a bit of damage already and you might be better off with a junkyard transmission.
the least you should do is fix the problem and change the fluid.
First, check your clutch system fluid, master cylinder and slave cylinder. Then check your pedal freeplay adjustment. When was your transmission gear oil last changed. Grinding when going into gears is a sign of worn out synchros. With that high mileage, you're probably due for a new clutch kit.
