Hi Scotty,
I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey with 260k miles and it's an automatic. I know one of the CV axles are bad. It's clicking. I watched your videos on how to change them and I'm grateful that it seems like an easy DIY project. But I was told that if you change one, you have to change the other. Even if one is not bad is this true? Thank you for all your help through the years with all your videos!
If the joints are quiet and boots not cracking on the other axle there's really no need to replace it. I replaced one axle on my car about 4 years ago (torn boot) and the other one is still good.
On some vehicles one axle may even be more prone to failing than the other due to proximity of the exhaust system or other factors.
Yep. Also in N.America, right hand turns are sharper than left hand turns.
hard to say with that kind of mileage. The axle that's still good might outlast the vehicle.
I would say do one. You don't save THAT much time time by doing both.
That's a tough call with 260k miles on the vehicle. You can get by with just doing one, but for peace of mind do both if you can swing it money-wise. Also, if you do both, you won't have to the job a 2nd time if/when the other one gives up.
In a pinch, you can replace only one. But odds are, the other one is not far behind.
It sounds like someone is trying to upsell you. In a lot of cases when one goes the other one soon goes but there are cases where one goes and the other one is good for a long time. If only one is bad don't waste your money replacing both.
Do both of them so you don't have to waste any more time later on.
