[Solved] Dead battery- Is it the alternator…

Hi Scotty,

I’m from Canada with a 2014 Honda CRV and the battery is giving me a headache.
Over the years I went over 4 batteries of different make but it really doesn’t matter, when the winter comes, the boost cables are at the door.
Just put a brand new AGM one with an 800A and 650A cold  start capacity. And 10 days later at -10C I needed a boots.

The alternator charges at 14.13 Amp at the battery posts, it has a 165mA consumption when the car is Off, measured from the + post and the end of the disconnected cable.

Thanks,

Tony.

is that what your car came with? If not, then it won't charge properly.

Is it the alternator…

take it to a parts store or battery dealer to be properly load tested.

You shouldn't have much trouble cranking at -10c, I only start noticing it around -20c.

One thing to keep in mind, if you drain a car starting battery, it hurts it for the long run. They are not meant for deep cycle.

So if you have accidentally drained your batteries, that could be one reason why they are weak. As @imperator mentioned, you got a fairly good parasitic drain going on, about double the normal. When cold weather hits, that drain really puts a hurting on a battery, that can lose half it's CCA at low temperatures, or more.

Test the alternator for sure. Also check your battery terminals for corrosion, that doesn't help either.
