Dealership clear coat for $2,000???

I went to my local Toyota dealership today thinking that I might be able to buy a new RAV4 for MSRP. But the salesman said they apply a special clear coat to all the cars they sell, and that results in a $2,000 upcharge. Is this normal? Is it possible to buy a new Toyota for something close to MSRP? Thanks.

It's a scam, and an old one at that. Shop around at other dealers. (You may need to look outside your area.)

Ahh the old trucoat bit. Oldest shill in the book. They probably just threw a coat of wax on it, if anything at all.

that's the beauty of it, nearly impossible to tell.

Aw man, I miss so many good add-ons like this when I buy ten+ year old cars.

Classic bait-and-switch.  If they’ll try that scam, what other unethical tricks are they trying to pull.  Definite deal breaker.

Whether you can get one for MSRP, I guess that depends on how far you want to drive...
