Denso Alternator Failure?

Topic starter

2013 Toyota Sienna. 130k. Bought used from dealer 12/24. @ 122k. Battery date code 11/24. No crank. No lights, anywhere. Jump pack will not start car. Volt and amp readings erratic from jump pack. Van will “quick click” at most. Alternator hot to touch. (Van has sat in driveway overnight)Burning electrical smell. Jumper cables hot. I believe alternator is factory with no evidence marks on electrical nuts. My shade tree diagnosis; alternator internal failure. Regulator/diodes failure. Possible battery damage. Wife said no alternator light showing before failure. Can a Denso alternator self destruct in winter (50-60 degree f in S. Calf)?  Can a defective alternator kill a fairly new battery??

Any part can self-destruct. A bad alternator could kill a battery and vice versa. Not all jump packs are strong enough to start a car with a completely dead battery. You need to do more troubleshooting.

@chucktobias Thanks Chuck. I suspected that. Physically I’m not very mobile right now. Later on I’ll do a on-the-car electrical check with a meter. Thanks again for the quick response!

@uaart1 You may well have a short somewhere, possibly internal to the alternator. Might be a good idea if possible to try charging the battery and testing it, maybe get some help to remove the alternator and have it tested.
