Hey Scotty and friends,
If I’ve never changed my ‘06 wranglers differential fluid since getting it at 114k it’s now 118k, should I or is changing the fluid going to loosen things up and cause problems
Nope. No problems whatsoever
Scotty said it might affect automatic transmissions.
He didn't say stop changing all the fluids in your car, so I don't know why people keep jumping to this conclusion.

I've wondered that as well. It might be that they're over-applying his leave it alone if it's not broken philosophy about a high mileage automatic tranny with an unknown history of fluid changes. That's all I can think.
I know. And I wonder if Scotty didn't actually cause more harm by harping on this all the damn time.
Maybe, maybe not. We know differentials are just splash lubricated gears and they really don't wear out unless someone drives until bad pinion and axle seals leak all of the oil out. Maybe this could be something to add to the FAQs section.
Feel free to write an article. Changing diff oil seems like standard owner's manual kind of stuff to me.
Water contamination is also common issue.
Slop in the driveline and bearings can lead to differential failure too.
Probably not. At least when you change it, you'll know it's right and can continue to maintain it properly. Use the manufacturer's recommended fluid, probably something like 80w90 hypoid gear oil.
