[Solved] Should I illegally tint my windows

Good afternoon everyone hope all is well. Discussion about dark window tint so I'm aware there's a percentage level law in every state however I've noticed I tend to see some people riding around with 20% tint or 5% tint which makes me wonder exactly how they get away with it. Is it really true that is possible and law enforcement don't really care about darker tint as long as your being normal on the road and not drawing attention to the point ya get pulled and they make a comment about the tint which results in a ticket? Sometimes I encounter someone with dark tint and a cop be either behind or beside the person an they don't take action and truth be told I've been thinking on having the side windows of my Honda Civic tinted 20% while the very back window remains 35%. I trust what everyone tells me here I had to come and put it up for discussion as its been a curiosity as to what the real truth is about darker tint and the law.

I recently had the windows tinted on my wife's Avalon. The guy that did it has been in the tint business for 20+ years. He recommended ceramic tint, which blocks heat from the sun really well without being overly dark. It cost me about 100 bucks more but the tint is legal and works well on keeping the car interior cooler. He keeps track on the number of tickets issued each month for illegal tint in the town where his shop is and the numbers are pretty high. He estimates that between the fine, tint removal and re-tinting you are looking at about a grand. Not worth it. The police in this particular town are well known for super strict traffic law enforcement. A lot of small to medium size jurisdictions rely on the money from traffic ticket fines to help fund their operations and window tint tickets are easy.

just obey the law and you won't have to worry

(Thumbs up)

If I got my windows tinted, I would first check state law to see what it was, and carry a receipt for the work done in the car so if I got stopped by an over zealous donut burner, I'd have proof it was done according to the law.

I would say it depends on the officer, the car being driven, who it's registered to, the neighborhood, etc.

In my experience, my windows are one shade below the legal limit. 35% vs 50%. I've had a few officers in certain cities rubberneck at me, but they've never done anything. I'm driving a red 1999 Ford Ranger that has no body rust, or a gray 2017 Ford Mustang. A friend of mine years ago had the same tint darkness, and he got pulled over all the time. He was driving an 18 year old red Dodge Avenger at the time, it was rusted out, he also had a few speeding tickets. I've always had a clean record.

I was told by a police officer friend that the reason they don't want you to have dark tint on the front windows is so they can see what the driver is doing in the driver's side mirror as they are walking up to the vehicle. If you roll your window down, this negates that problem. Having a clean record probably helps deter their attention to others as well. Window tint seems to be something akin to a bad brake light or failure to signal lane changes or turns. They notice that, but don't seem to care, unless you're doing other things, like speeding or driving over the line. They may or may not pull you over, it really depends on the officer and his mood, I guess.

A huge no-no is window tint on the whole windshield.  My truck has dark tint on the windshield, but it doesn't go below where a lowered sun visor is.

Oh okay

To be honest most of the police departments are stretched so thin and have so many other things to deal with that the don’t bother. However you may get pulled over by the state highway patrol. Personally I wouldn’t go over the state limit because it would be my luck I would get pulled over. Best advice is never break more than one law at a time.

I have 5% all around and 70% windshield. Most cops dont like doing all the paperwork for a simple fix it ticket. I do believe it on the cop mood for the day.
