And do smaller engines last as long as bigger engines
The higher speed you go, you put more strain on the transmission.
do smaller engines last as long as bigger engines
At higher speeds, compared to bigger engines, smaller engines are strained more and so they do not last as long as bigger engines.
No.
City driving is much worse for transmission because it is constantly shifting.
It depends on the make and model of the car. I'd take a Corolla with an AISIN transmission over a JATCO Maxima CVT transmission, to take one example. And there are some larger cars poorly paired with transmissions better suited for a compact, as well. So, the devil is in the details.
It also depends on what's the going speed on the highway. For example, if you're driving on DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, which is a highway, of sorts, the speed limit tends to be between 45-55 mph. If you're in Central Texas, the toll roads are sometimes 80 mph, and the lighter stretches of Interstate highway traffic have speed limits of 75 mph.
The other variable is, of course, proper and timely maintenance of a transmission. It doesn't matter how excellent a transmission is, it has to be regularly serviced, by competent personnel. (No flushes, BTW, ever).
That's what I have here, for you, now.
