Hey Scotty! Big fan from Germany over here! I have a question for you. It is really hard to find good American trucks in Germany because they are not being sold directly by the car companies, but rather have to be imported and have to go through some modifying to be compatible with german regulation. I am currently driving a '99 Dodge RAM with the 5.9 Magnum V8, which is is becoming quite annoying to maintain. The body is rusting on the typical spots and I recently replaced the whole A/C system, the starter, the generator, the water pump, the thermostat, the whole front axle, and I had to get new rims in the front, because they kept losing air pressure. Now it seems as if the carburetor is causing some problems too. From time to time the car wont idle and the enginge will just go shut down, if dont step on the gas at least a little bit. I think it has to do with the throttle valve, but I am not sure what to do. I cleaned it, and the problem keeps coming back sometimes. Then a day passes and its gone. The other big problem is that the truck will sometimes shift in upper gears way too late. Usually this happens from 2nd into 3rd and into 4th - more often when the engine is already warm. I kinda like the 2nd gens, but I have been thinking about switching to Ford a lot. I am looking into a 2007 F-150 5.4 Liter, which is being sold at a local dealer here in my area. It looks really clean and had all the inspections. Would you say rather keep the old 2nd gen RAM or would it definitely be progress to get the Ford?
There is also a 2019 Tundra being sold close to me that a Toyota dealership imported from the States - priced at 70.000€, which is just over 81.000 US Dollars!!!! I love the Tundra, but that is unfortunately way to expensive in my opinion. What to you think?
Thank you from Germany and may God bless you and the United States!
Get the Ford
I'd go with the Ford on that one.
Yep, the Ford is probably the best choice. The Ram, as it seems, began falling apart like all Chrysler products end up doing…
God bless you and Germany.
Side note: if you’re considering a smaller truck (and you’re probably not because driving an American full sized truck is an unmatchable experience) the Nissan Navara is also marketed as the “Renault Alaskan” - I herd those depreciate drastically more then Nissans making them quite a solid value. (It’s the same workhorse Renault M9T diesel and 7 Speed Infiniti transmission, although I’d avoid the high output / twin turbo variant - seems a bit much for 2.3L)
Get something you can easily get parts for, and your local mechanics know how to work on it. This importation stuff is just headache you don't need.
Thank you all for the advice! I got the American import on purpose, because I wanted a bigger truck with a V8. I thought, usually they are easy to work on even without having a shop around that knows US verhicles. Especially the older ones are pretty basic. Its just the amount of stuff with my RAM is getting on my nerves. We have a lot of Ford Rangers driving around. The Renault Alaskan is kinda nice, although I would probably prefer the VW Amarok, if I would decide to switch to a European truck. The next VW Truck is going to be a cooperation between Ford and VW, so pretty solid stuff. Getting parts for the Truck is easy and cheap thanks to Rockauto.com. They need 3 days to arrive and are so cheap that even getting parts for local cars is not really faster and cheaper... I think I will get the Ford. As long as our fanatic environmental government allow V8's, I'm gonna drive one. Thank you guys!
