Hi I have a 2005 Acura tsx with 120,000 miles and it’s an automatic. To be brief I accidentally drove with my emergency brake on for about 5-10 minutes going 35-45 miles per hour because I was going to a gas station and I smell burning .. What kind of consequences can I expect and if I do get my car check out and expect repairs what kind can I expect and will it be expensive ? I’m worried I damage my rear wheel area . Thank you sir

I accidentally drove with my emergency brake on

So there are two main concerns with that:

  1. pad wear: a lot of wear occurred. You need to find out if pads need replacing
  2. heat: driving with brakes engaged generates a lot of heat. Enough to get metal glowing red hot and start roasting things. I don't know how hot your brakes got. You might be totally fine, or you might needs to replace a lot of things like sensors, brake lines and even tires. That's why ....

Step 1: Stop guessing and ordering parts. The absolutely first thing that needs to happen is the car should be jacked up , or put on a lift, the wheel removed, and take stock of what happened.

So next question: are you doing the work yourself? (mechanically inclined? got tools?) If not , then the answer is that you need to take the car to a mechanic.

Did you smell burning and so went to a gas station to set that in fire??

To the question: your rear brake shoes will have suffered and possibly be fading off now, so new shoes will be due.

Maybe there is heat-damage to the wheel brake cylinders too.

Wheels and drums will have to be taken off and the internals inspected and changed when shot.

(assumed you have drum brakes at the  rear, no disc brakes).

Uh can I get this part from autozone or should I go OEM ? Or can u give me some brands I can get some from?

Hi additionally to answer your question for either drum or disc in the rear im not too sure it’s just factory OEM for Acura tsx 05 ..
also if u could please tell me what parts could I get to replace like (autozone , Amazon , ebay motor ) if aftermarket or should I just go with OEM if there is any

* can u clarify “internals” as in the inside of the wheel rotor area ?

My key take away is current but little confused
-get new rear brake shoes
-inspect wheel brake cylinder
-inspect wheel and drum internals I think?

Probably best and cheapest is to let your car's rear brakes tested on a rolling drum tester as car-inspecting stations use to see if your brakes are up to what the law wants.

Guess workshops will have these testers too.

The brakes should retard the car sufficiently and work evenly left and right.

Maybe you are lucky and your misuse did not harm the rear brakes.

Per the rockauto.com database that vehicle has 4-wheel disc brakes.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/acura,2005,tsx,2.4l+l4,1430830,brake+&+wheel+hub,brake+pad,1684?

The main consequence of driving with the brakes dragging would be excess wear on the rear brake pads, assuming the parking brake is on the rear. (Some cars have parking brake on the front wheels but most are on the back.) That's what the burning smell was, brake pads overheating.

Just examine the brake pads for wear and rotors for scoring. It's possible for overheated rotors to warp but you'd feel that in the brake pedal if it happened. I'd expect if any repair is needed it would be no more than brake pads and rotors.

Oh okay that is nice to hear thank you so much guys for providing information . I do have a concern what about my brake shoe , also my wheel / tires are good right just the brake pad and rotor u mention

My elderly mother drove her Avalon (4 wheel disc) to town and back (15-20mins) with the parking break engaged. She contacted me because it didn't have the "pep" it usually did. Realizing what happened, I was expecting the worse. Instead, after checking; rotors were OK, pads were shot and that was the full extent of the damage. She was lucky.
