Absolutely not. Almost everything is powered by computers nowadays, and you could seriously short things out if you were to replace the battery with the car running. Those "technicians" were lucky.
That's just stupidity. It just goes to show you that Jiffy Lube will hire anybody with a pulse.
My '79 Pontiac you could change the battery while the car is running, because there weren't any computers back then. It's still ill-advised, even with my Pontiac.

You can do severe damage to a modern car's electrical system that way. That kind of malfeasance is one of the reasons why we tell people to stay away from those quick-lube joints.
No. Shut it off. If you have a charger, it's not a bad idea to hook that up before changing the battery.
