I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, 197,000 miles for my kids to drive. I am looking for some suggestions to troubleshoot an electrical issue. It has been an inexpensive reliable vehicle for our kids to drive.
The factory keyless entry/alarm would beep the horn when locking the car unless a door was not shut tight, map light was left on etc.
The vehicle sat in the driveway not being used for several months until I had time to replace the crankshaft pulley. By the time I got it replaced, the battery had run down and would not take a charge so I put in a new battery.
After the pulley was been replaced I had an issue with the throttle position sensor acting up so I replaced that. Everything mechanically seemed to be working, but then it started to have an issue with the alarm that I think is probably either an electrical short or a bad sensor.
The horn will not beep to indicate the alarm is armed when locking the vehicle with the remote key fob and the alarm will sometimes go off randomly even if nothing touches the car.
Also, occasionally if the headlights are on, the transmission has issues shifting and the code scanner gives the code for an issue with the transmission position sensor.
The airbag light has also come on and gives the code for a seatbelt tensioner being too tight.
It is the teenagers' car so I want to try to troubleshoot as much as I can before taking it to a shop. I don't want to put much money into a car for high school kids since there is no telling if or when they may wreck the car and total it out.
I think it has to be either a short or a bad sensor somewhere. Any suggestion where to start troubleshooting anything?
I would start by having the battery and alternator load tested because if you have a somewhat wonky battery that will make the alarm come off at odd times.
So many different issues...I'd look for rodent damaged wiring. Rodents find some wiring insulation quite tasty. And if they built a nest, their body waste is very corrosive to wiring and connectors.
