End of my auto transmission?

Hi Scotty! Peter from Perth, Western Australia. I have a 2015 Toyota Camry 2.5l auto, made in Australia, with over 431,000 km on the odometer. My transmission occasionally starts with a strong jerk after a stop and not engage the right gear while running between 3 to 4 gear. Is my car worth a transmission rebuilt, replacement or just drive it till its demise?

Hi,

When it does eventually go out, just try to find an inexpensive junkyard unit with a warranty that includes labour.

Until then, I’d show it to a tranny shop but if the price is too high (and it probably is), I’d just keep driving.

assuming it was serviced properly (and that the current condition of the fluid isn’t too bad) - automatic transmissions can still last quite sometime while jerking.

Maybe you have the U760E

You didn't provide enough info, is the transmission bad or is this just speculation? I am not a mechanic, but that is very odd for Toyota Camry's they have pretty bullet-proof powertrains... I would take it to a dealer or mechanic possibly it could be a glitch with the computer. Or something else, I would try and shift it manually with the buttons and see if it still happens but, best of luck.

He has over 400,000km, much more than these last on average - it’s not “odd”. And no, that’s not a computer glitch.

What I meant by odd was that I have never heard of Toyota Camrys going out at 260,000 miles which is a lot don't get me wrong but I though it would last longer. That is what I meant.

Nope they usually go out way before that.
Feel free to look on the forum, I remember seeing a complete transmission failure with only around 100k miles on the latest generation.
Not to mention torque conveyor shuddering around 100k miles on certain XV50 models, oil consumption on earlier XV40, and more fun issues - including head gaskets and head bolts on the older ones.
