Engine Air filter replacement question

Scotty and moderators,

I have a 2019 Corolla (1.8 L) with 49,000 miles currently on it.  I checked the engine air filter and it is getting pretty dirty and its getting hard to see the sun through it (using Scotty's technique).  I never replaced one myself before (I used to have a mechanic or oil change place replace it) but I would like to since its very easy on this vehicle.  I want to make sure I buy the correct one and from reading some of the previous questions on here (from a search), it seems like going with the OEM filter is better than aftermarket ones??  Let me know.

And also, is it better to buy the air filter at an auto parts store, or online?  I know Scotty most of the times doesn't suggest buying parts online, so let me know.

Thanks.

Find out if the auto parts stores carry the OEM air filter. If they don't, get an OEM air filter on RockAuto for your Carolla. All of the auto parts stores around me don't stock Motorcraft air filters for my 1999 Ranger, so I ordered one on RockAuto when I ordered a bunch of parts for my project classic car. With shipping, the Motorcraft filter cost what the STP filter cost at the store, and there is a significant difference in quality from OEM to those knock-off STP filters. The Motorcraft filter almost overstuffs the airbox and made the lid a little tough to get on. The STP I threw out had fewer pleats and a noticeably looser fit in the air box. It's also Made in China, the Motorcraft filter's Made in USA, and the Toyota OEM filter's probably Made in Japan.

Thanks for letting me know. Seems that the auto parts stores in my area don't stock the OEM for mine. However, I searched on RockAuto and I think this Wix 49104 filter seems to be the one that seems the closest to the OEM, and looks the closest to what is in my car now. However from looking at the pictures of it, it doesn't seem like it says Denso on it like the one that's still in my car, most likely the original one (which I know lots of parts are from Denso for Toyota's). This ones also the most expensive one in their standard replacements list which tells me it's probably the best one. But does it matter that it doesn't say Denso? I'd like to understand this before I buy it. Here's the link to this filter if this helps: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1063114&cc=3442462&pt=6192&jsn=417&jsn=417&jsn=417&jsn=417

A high quality aftermarket filter will be fine, I believe a couple people here use Wix filters. You don't want a cheap "economy" filter, they don't filter as well or last as long.

To make sure you get the correct filter, always take your VIN to the parts store (or on the order if your go online).  I get parts locally so I don't have to wait for shipping or if I have a problem and have to take stuff back.

Try this link; it's Toyota's official website for parts and it has an option to find dealerships near you that sell the part you want and you can buy it online then go pick it up or a shipping option. It has worked for me in my area so thought it might work for you too.

I would go with a WIX if not going with OEM. Search on YouTube as Project Farm did a comparison of various air filters. WIX came out on top.

I have always used them and have never had any issues

Hell yeah! Love project farm!
