Engine cool down

Topic starter

It used to be that if you were driving for an extended period of time, say on the freeway for a trip, when you stopped, you were supposed to let the car idle for a minute or two to allow the engine to cool down a bit. Especially if you had a turbo engine. Is that still a valid idea?

In the case of turbo engines, you need to cool down for the turbo before turn off the engine, but this is not the case for NA engines.

If your engine isn't overheating then it's unnecessary.

Regarding turbos, check your owner's manual.
