Engine Revs Drop

I have a 2008 2.3L I4 Ford Ranger Automatic Trans

The problem I'm concerned about is that when I am parked idling or stopped at a light, sometimes the engine revs will drop to 400-500 rpm. It kind of sounds like it wants to stall sometimes. I haven't really had any other problems with my truck, just that the AC needs a recharge and it has 152k on it (not that the mileage should be a problem).

@eddieegee
I had a similar issue in a different vehicle. Check the air filter and spark plugs for fun but I’d expect it to be something gunked up. Clean the throttle body and make sure the PCV valve is happy.

Appreciate the help! BTW I have new spark plugs (changed them at around 145k) and I recently put in a new air filter. I haven't checked any valves or anything like that, but hopefully its not out of my generic tools reach to have a look at.

If it only does this after the car gets up to temp I would be willing to bet it is to do with the egr valve. Other things to check would be for vacuum leaks or what @spiers said.

You can easily take an egr valve off and just clean it out with throttle body cleaner and put it back on. Sometimes you can suck on the vacuum tube and make the diaphram open and close to make sure it is functioning depends on the design though 🙂
