I would like to keep my 2nd Gen 4runner (1990) that I drive regularly as long as I can get parts for it. When motor replacement becomes necessary, could I replace it with a 3rd Gen motor? That would be going from 3vze to 5vz. Could it be done with minimal mod?

Probably a bad idea due to all the different mechanical parts and electronics, unless you have the time and patience to deal with the niggles, later on. Plus who knows if the transmission will be compatible or not.

You’d have to get advice from someone who has actually performed this swap.
You may be better off just buying a used engine (if you find one in good shape), or just rebuilding the present engine, if you’re attached to the vehicle and don’t want to get rid of it.
