Erratic speedometer

I have a 96 f150 5.0 with the e40d trans. One day driving to work the speedo died out no movement at all and the digital mileage was blank as well. I smelled an electrical smell when it happend. I got home pulled a code p0500 so I bought a speed sensor (vss) from autozone and installed it. Caught hell getting the old one out. Was blowing the #18 fuse instantly also. Not blowing the fuse anymore but speedo jumping around like crazy. No hard shifts at this point but it does go in and out of gear it seems as I test drive it. Sent it to the shop and they did the same as I did. They claim my alternator is bad. Any idea what the problem is? I also swapped psom before when it was blowing the fuse. STUCK!! Don't wanna through a lot of money at the truck but its my hoss 176,xxx miles.

Went from shifting hard before the sensor change to seeming like its in neutral sometimes with new sensor

Well if the speed sensor system shorted out you can feed back and I can destroy the speedometer head that could easily be the problem what you smell was probably warriors melting it could also mess with the PCM which helps run that or any of the body control modules
