My dad has had his 2010 Toyota Corolla S for 8+ years or so maybe more with 228k miles on it now, he bought it at about 20-30k. he uses it to go to work back and forth on the highway but he lended it to me for a month or so. it ran fine drove fine until i would try to pass someone on the highway or hit the gas hard it was shift very hard and jolt the whole car. i asked my dad about it he said it always does that and has for awhile but he just babies it. i was wondering if there’s something wrong with it and if there’s a fix or it’s just something he should live with.

Sounds like it's starting to come apart.

Was it ever serviced during those 200,000 miles?

See our FAQ for details.

i asked him if he changed the transmission fluid, he said that it has the lifetime fluid or whatever and that it doesn’t need to be changed. but i told him he should still change it

Well if you never change the fluid, then the lifetime of the transmission is going to be very short. So in a way, they are correct. You could say the same about engine oil too.
.
If you change it often then the lifetime can be well beyond 200k.

so if he changes it now would that help it in any way?

First, read the FAQ and use the search box.
I can't diagnose your transmission over the internet. Take the car to a pro who can hook up diagnostic tools that analyze your transmission to find out what's wrong with it.

There is no such thing as "lifetime fluid" unless you want the life of the transmission to be short.

It may already be too late for that transmission. See the FAQ.
